Perth Silver Four Guardians
This silver coin from The Perth Mint's Chinese Myths and Legends series for 2024 features the Four Guardians.
These four creatures not only represent physical directions and seasons but are also important in traditional Chinese cosmology. Each guardian is associated with one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and together they balance the cosmic forces in the universe. They are often depicted in art, architecture, and religious rituals as protectors of sacred spaces.
In addition to the four creatures, sometimes a central figure known as the "Yellow Dragon" (representing the center) is added to complete a five-elemental model, symbolizing Earth and balance.
In Taoist and Buddhist traditions, these guardians are invoked to protect against evil spirits and to maintain cosmic order. They are also a key part of the Feng Shui tradition, where their directional alignments are important for harmony in living spaces.
