About James
James the son of Zebedee, one of Christ’s inner circle alongside Peter and John, became a central figure in Christian tradition after his martyrdom around 44 A.D. Although his early life is only briefly mentioned in the Gospels, medieval devotion dramatically elevated his legacy. Known in Spain as Santiago, James became the symbolic protector of the Iberian Peninsula.
According to tradition, his remains were carried to the northwest region of Galicia, where the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was built in his honor. By the 10th century, this site had become the destination of the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route that drew travelers from across Europe. The Camino developed into one of Christianity’s three great medieval pilgrimages—alongside Jerusalem and Rome—and shaped Spanish cultural and religious identity for centuries.
The enduring veneration of James transformed him from a relatively lesser-known apostle into a powerful emblem of faith, perseverance, and the Christian heritage of Europe.
