About the Design:
Designed by Canadian paleoartist Julius Csotonyi, this remarkable oval-shaped coin brings prehistoric life into extraordinary focus. The reverse presents a close-up view of the eye of Thanatotheristes degrootum—the most ancient and recently named tyrannosaur species discovered in Canada (2020). Every fine engraved scale across the skin and eyelid enhances the lifelike texture, while the vivid coloration within the eye reveals a striking reflection of its surroundings. In this mirrored world, other members of the species move through the swampy forests of Cretaceous Western Canada, offering a glimpse into a long-extinct ecosystem.
