Star of David
The Star of David, or Magen David (“Shield of David”), is a six-pointed star formed by two interlocking triangles. Though its earliest uses in Jewish life are not precisely known, it has long served as a meaningful emblem of faith and identity. Over time, it became a prominent feature in synagogues and on ceremonial objects, and today it is widely recognized as a symbol of Judaism, also appearing on the flag of Israel.
In Jewish tradition, the Star of David is often understood as a sign of divine protection. Its six points are said to represent God’s presence surrounding the Jewish people in every direction—north, south, east, west, above, and below. The interlocking triangles have also been seen as expressing the sacred relationship between God, the people of Israel, and the Torah: one triangle reaching upward symbolizes Israel’s devotion, while the other pointing downward reflects God’s guidance and care.
Because of these associations, the Star of David is more than a design—it conveys unity, resilience, and the enduring covenant at the heart of Judaism. It continues to hold deep spiritual and cultural meaning, linking past generations to the present.
