2025 Libertad Release
The 2025 Libertad coin release is historic due to its extremely low mintages and the complete absence of gold coins—a first for the series. In stark contrast to previous years, where the 1 oz silver BU Libertad often had mintages over 300,000 (e.g., ~437,000 in 2021), the 2025 version is limited to just 500 coins. Other sizes are equally scarce: the 5 oz BU silver Libertad is limited to 200 coins, and the ¼ oz BU version to only 100 coins. These unprecedented lows have made 2025 one of the rarest Libertad years ever, with collector demand and secondary market prices expected to surge accordingly.

Mexican Silver Libertads
Among modern bullion coins of the Americas, the Silver Libertad occupies a distinctive position. While many government issued silver bullion coins are produced primarily in a single standard weight, the Libertad series includes a broad range of sizes. Silver Libertads are struck in 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz and 1 kilo formats of .999 fine silver.

This variety allows collectors to pursue the series across multiple denominations while maintaining the same recognizable imagery. Despite the number of sizes produced, Libertad mintages generally remain lower than those of widely distributed bullion coins such as the American Silver Eagle or the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. These lower mintages contribute to the collectibility of the series.

The reverse design references a well known legend tied to the volcanoes shown behind the Winged Victory statue. According to a pre Columbian story, the warrior Popocatépetl fell in love with Iztaccíhuatl, the daughter of a king. The king allowed the marriage on the condition that the warrior prove himself in battle. During the campaign, a rival falsely reported that Popocatépetl had died.

Overcome with grief, Iztaccíhuatl passed away before the warrior returned. When Popocatépetl came back victorious and discovered what had happened, he carried her body to the mountains and laid her to rest upon a peak shaped like a sleeping woman. The warrior remained nearby to guard her memory. The mountains that bear their names still overlook the Valley of Mexico and appear in the design of the Silver Libertad.

Mexican Mint
La Casa de Moneda de México, known as the Mexican Mint, has produced the Silver Libertad since the series began in 1982. The institution itself is far older. It was established in 1535 by Spanish viceroy Antonio de Mendoza under the authority of the Spanish Crown, making it the oldest mint in the Americas.

Over the centuries the mint produced widely circulated coins such as the silver 8 Reales and later the Mexican peso. These coins traveled throughout global trade networks connecting the Americas, Europe and Asia. This long tradition of silver coinage ultimately led to the creation of the modern Silver Libertad series.
