About the Nez Perce Tribe
The Nez Perce Tribe—who call themselves the Niimíipuu, meaning “The People”—have deep ancestral ties to the lands that now form the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness. For generations, the Niimíipuu lived, traveled, and hunted throughout this rugged region, relying on its rivers, canyons, and wildlife for sustenance and cultural identity. The Salmon River, in particular, was central to their way of life, serving as both a food source and a vital travel corridor. This wilderness is also closely connected to the history of the Nez Perce War, when members of the tribe traversed these challenging landscapes during their flight toward Canada. Today, the area stands not only as a symbol of natural beauty, but also as a powerful reminder of the Niimíipuu’s enduring connection, resilience, and cultural heritage.
