- Obverse: The original Capitol with the date 1800, and a much smaller current Capitol with the date 2001. This design is a variation on the same theme as used on the half dollar.
- Reverse: Presents a heraldic eagle reminiscent of the same artist's reverse design for the 1986 Silver Eagle bullion coin. In the present incarnation, the national bird wears a ribbon lettered U.S. Capital Visitor Center.
