Designing The 250th Anniversary Commemoratives

The Past Defines our Future

The story of the United States began with the first settlers stepping off tall ships like these to found a land of the free. In the intervening two and a half centuries, a commitment to self-evident truths and unalienable rights has led the United States to where we are now. May these ideals continue to be a guiding light for the next 250 years.

A Sailing Tradition that Started with President John F. Kennedy

Operation Sail, held in 1964, was endorsed by President John F. Kennedy and took place in New York Harbor alongside an International Naval Review.

Since then, New York has welcomed tall ships for the 1976 Bicentennial, the 1986 Statue of Liberty centennial, the 1992 Columbus Quincentennial, the 2000 Millennium celebration, and the 2012 Bicentennial of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Sail4th will be the next commemorative tall ship event in 2026.

Designed by the Best

These commemorative rounds were designed by famed coin designer Joel Iskowitz. While working with the U.S. Mint, he created more than 50 coin and medal designs. Iskowitz's work has been featured in international journals, including profiles of his numismatic and philatelic art in COINage Magazine, Watercolor Magazine, American Artist Magazine, and more. His murals have been highlighted in Exhibit Builder Magazine, and in 2011 he was inducted into the Hunter College Hall of Fame.
