This 1 oz fine Silver coin’s reverse features the King of Thieves, while the obverse, which is common among all three coins in the 825th Anniversary of the Vienna Mint series, features Leopold V’s equestrian seal.

The Myth, The Legend
Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe, published in 1820, brought us the vision of Robin Hood we know today - the outlaw hero of numerous ballads dating from the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Whether the King of Thieves really existed is uncertain. What is clearer, however, is that the taxation imposed on the people of England in order to raise the huge ransom paid to Austria for the release of King Richard caused violent social unrest in the country, which historians believe led to the origin of the legend of Robin Hood. The Silver coin's reverse features the King of Thieves while the obverse, which is common the all three coins in the 825th Anniversary of the Vienna Mint series, features Leopold V's equestrian seal.

The long and eventful history of the Austrian Mint began in the final decade of the 12th century. In 1192, King Richard the Lionheart of England was imprisoned in the castle of Dürnstein at the behest of Duke Leopold V of Austria. He was released upon the payment of a large ransom in Silver. Leopold used the ransom to make Silver coins, which led to the founding of the original Vienna Mint.
