Junk Silver Coins
90%, 40% & 35% Silver U.S. Coins - 90% Silver U.S. coins were the basis for our currency for hundreds of years until 1965, when the price of Silver began increasing dramatically. In 1965, at the direction of Congress, the U.S. Mint removed all Silver from dimes and quarters, and reduced the Silver content in half-dollars to 40%. The U.S. government replaced that Silver with a copper-nickel alloy known as cupronickel. Shortly thereafter, the American public started hoarding the older U.S. Silver coins. Since then, the original Silver coins have become scarcer and more desirable. Those pre-1965 Silver coins, sometimes referred to as junk Silver coins or scrap Silver, are a great way to buy Silver and begin investing in Silver.
Produced by the United States from mid-1942 to 1945, war nickels were made from 56% copper, 35% Silver and 9% manganese. The government was able to utilize nickel previously allocated for use in coinage for the production of military supplies during World War II. Unlike regular nickels, the war nickels have a slightly different coloration and a mintmark that appears above Monticello on the coin’s reverse.
APMEX has a wide variety of junk Silver in various amounts and formats. Peruse our selection of this fascinating Silver today.
In contrast to the Silver coins collected for Silver content, vintage Silver coins like the Silver Dollars minted in the U.S. are highly collectible to numismatists. These American Silver coins are a favorite among collectors due to their size, beauty and availability. Stand outs among these Silver coins are the Early Dollars, Liberty Seated Dollars, Morgan Dollars, Trade Dollars and Peace Dollars, all held in high regard due to their Silver content, historical significance and face value as a currency.
