The Australian Silver Kookaburra series from the Perth Mint began in 1990 and is the longest-running bullion program from the mint. Each year has a different design of a kookaburra on the reverse.
The laughing Kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher species, and a bird synonymous with the Australian bush. This bird species is indigenous to Australia and is known for their call, which is said to sound like echoing human laughter.
Not only are designs changed on the bullion coins each year, the Proof designs vary each year as well! Historically, the mintage of each 1 oz bullion Silver Kookaburra coin has been a maximum of 300,000 coins. However, in 2011 the maximum mintage was moved to 500,000 coins to accommodate the very high demand for this series. Compared to other Silver bullion coin series, this mintage is still very small and has helped ensure the collectibility of each coin.

I was avoiding Kookaburra's and Koala's because they usually command a high premium over spot, but I was lucky to catch in on sale. This Kookaburra doesn't disappoint in person, the amount of detail is incredible. I love how the Perth mint coins come in an airtight. Apmex delivers again with fast shipping and good packaging.

- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)

These coins have excellent potential. The mintage is well below 1 million, yet they are only a little more expensive than the American Eagles and not that much more than generic rounds. (Which I do recommend starting with if you do not own significant silver.) These Kookaburra coins are around 500,000 mintage per year. There are some examples of coins with similar mintage that are worth a fortune today: The 1909S VDB penny, the 1877 Indian cent, the 1914 D cent, 1931S penny, and many of the Seated Liberty coins we have today. Despite being smaller, they carry higher premiums and similar mintage. I think, once people wake up and realize what a value silver is, these collectible coins will realize similar premiums because people will want them--and they will use generic rounds and high mintage Eagles to spend (along with 90% silver coins). The Kookaburras come with a protective capsule, so if you do not open them, they will remain in uncirculated condition forever. This also makes them a bit bulkier than Eagles and Maple Leafs that come in loose flaps or loose in tubs of 20 or 25. Even the Koala and Kangaroo come in loose flaps (and yes, I also recommend those). Buy these now, and you will not regret it. Just look at the premiums, as modest as they are, in the earlier years of Kookaburras. Just imagine what they will be like in 50 years or so. Plus, you are getting silver for when the dollar becomes toilet paper, something that will be a bargain once that happens (and we get no final warning just before it does).

- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
