The beasts of heraldry are ancient symbols of power and lineage, passed down through generations and centuries. Fascinating stories can be found behind the pageantry, not least in The Queen’s Beasts. Ten creatures stood guard at the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen at Westminster Abbey in 1953. Hundreds of years of British history were represented by the mythical beasts – the griffin, falcon, bull, yale, greyhound, dragon, unicorn, horse and two lions – all carved in her honor.
This majestic coin is a must-have for any collection! Add this 2017 Great Britain Proof 1 oz Silver Queen's Beasts Lion to your cart today!
Jody has given The Queen’s Beasts Collection a fierce and fantastical start with the lion of England, inspired by both heraldry and the true nature of the beast in the wild. Each coin in the collection is accompanied by a booklet created in collaboration with Clive Cheesman, Richmond Herald at the College of Arms.

The more minimal design of the proof versions of the Queens Beasts may put off some, but I think it's a good choice. It highlights the exceptional depiction of the lion in its rampant stance. The frosted relief against the smooth mirror-like field accentuates the detail and contours of the lion very well. The small 12-page booklet accompanying this coin is a nice addition, about half devoted to the Queen's Beasts in general and the other half to the lion specifically. The coin and packaging arrived in perfect condition. The coin comes in a twist-off capsule from the mint that actually fits well. Five stars for the coin itself. My only complaint is that the presentation box from the mint is essentially just black cardboard with a glued paper hinge along the back. A presentation box more akin to Perth mint standards would be preferred.
