Each release of the Next Generation coins will display a mother & baby from an Australian Outback species. In addition, each coin includes the enhanced security feature of micro-engraved radial lines. All coins in the series are struck as Piedfort coins, meaning they are the same diameter as Perth's standard round Silver coins of the same weight but are double the thickness.
When early European settlers first encountered koalas in Australia, they thought the tree-climbing animals were monkeys or bears. Even though they're still referred to by some as "koala bears", they're actually marsupials like kangaroos and wombats.
Koalas have special physical characteristics that complement their tree-dwelling lifestyle. They're able to grip branches and pick eucalyptus leaves with their two opposable digits, and their tough skin and sharp claws provide traction in climbing. They even have extra thick fur on their seat so they can sit comfortably on branches for hours. Unique to Australia, these animals are a perfect theme for an iconic coin series.

These are great coins. I do wish that they had put them in capsules at the mint to better protect them in transit. But totally worth it either way. Only a couple have minor blemishes out of 10. Overall a great purchase. I don't see these getting any cheaper as time goes on. Thanks Apmex.

I only ordered 1 to see if I'd like it. The coin has a very beautiful design. However, there are a few "nicks" on the rim on one side, and one is terribly obvious to the naked eye. I can only guess this came from the mint in this condition. It's too bad, I would have ordered more but I'll pass.
