British Gold Sovereign Coin
Gold sovereigns can be appealing coins for bullion investors and collectors for their prominent historical use as circulated currency within the British Empire and as an excellent store of value. The name stems from the English Gold sovereign, which predated it by more than two centuries. The new sovereign was conceived as part of the Great Recoinage of 1816 to help stabilize the British economy following the upheaval due to military and economic wars with the various regimes of a turbulent France. The sovereign coins were to replace the Gold guinea and were worth 20 shillings.

Italian sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci was commissioned by William Wellesley Pole, master of The Royal Mint, to design this new coin. Pistrucci's St. George and the Dragon has been on each sovereign coin's reverse side ever since. The obverse features the reigning monarch at the time of minting. Tradition holds that the direction a monarch faces is always opposite of the monarch that came before. At increments smaller than a full ounce, British Gold sovereign coins can be a more affordable way to begin building your Gold investment portfolio.

Awesome coin + World Recognition

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Here are a few reasons why these are so special: 1) Historical. You're holding something that savers since the British Empire & Victorian Era held onto (not to mention all the WW1 and WW2 soldiers and pilots who carried these) 2) Strategic savings for budgeters not too far from spot. 3) The British SAS often carry these when on dangerous missions on foreign soil. 4) They blend in with your pocket change and can take a beating! 5) World recognition. You can sell these anywhere for local currency. 6) You'll literally feel a connection to Britain (especially after you visit for the first time) BONUS: Remember the hunter from the first Jumanji film? Those were Sovereigns he used to buy the rifle in the gun shop scene ;)

Excellent Value and most are much better than avg circ

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Most of the many British Sovereign Gold coins I have purchased, are in super nice condition and better than the avg circ condition as advertised. (many look uncirculated) Also, I have received many various old dated coins which I like. APMEX has the best prices and best service anywhere I have found in the country. It has always been easy to reach persons at APMEX on the phone. Packages are sealed and secure and delivered to my door with a signature. Absolutely an excellent company to deal with, and very good prices.

Delighted to receive an Edward VII. Attracted by the premium discount sale. A piece of history. Lower premium than a quarter ounce American Eagle, but still well known by coin and precious metal enthusiasts. Many thanks to the Apmex pickers and staff.

Discounted premium attracted me.

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Seen this in the "Deals" section listed in Average Condition and thought I'd try one. The one I received was minted 1964 which probably explained the almost BU condition. I was delighted! Nice way to add smaller weight bullion at low premiums. I will buy again.
