The festival, which boasts a rich history of playing stage to the most distinguished figures of the artistic world, celebrates its 40th year. During its four decades of existence, the festival has enjoyed the participation of performers from 92 different countries in 2,117 concerts, 797 theater productions, 530 dance productions and 654 visual art exhibitions, as well as showing 815 films. The prestige and impeccable trajectory of the FIC has made it one of the most prominent and sought after scenes for Mexican and international artists.

The festival is recognized as one of the best in Iberoamerica due to its membership in the European Festival Association and was awarded the Garcia Lorca prize in 1997 by the Latin American Center of Theatre Creation and Research, the Provincial government of Granada and the Primer actomagazine. The FIC has also won the Hispanoamericano Max a las Artes Escenicas prize granted by the Spanish General Society of Authors and Editors, and two commemorative medals from the Guanajuato state congress and the Mexican Senate. This national and international recognition reflects the FIC's strong institution and explains its reputation, currently ranked among the five best international arts festivals in the world.
