Pandas
The Gold Panda series was first introduced in 1982 in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. A 1/20 oz coin was added to the series in 1983, and some years have also featured larger 5 oz and 12 oz gold coins. In 2016, the People’s Republic of China shifted the series to metric weights to better align with international markets. One of the defining characteristics of the Gold Panda series is its annually changing panda design, which adds to the coins’ collectibility. The only exception occurred in 2002, when the same design from 2001 was used. After collectors expressed concern, the tradition of new yearly designs resumed in 2003.

Each Gold Panda coin is issued and guaranteed by the People’s Republic of China. The coins are produced at several Chinese mints, including Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Shenyang. Unlike U.S. Mint products, Chinese Panda coins generally do not carry mint marks identifying their mint of origin. However, certain years, such as 1987, include mint marks like “Y” or “S.” Collectors also note small design variations between mintages, including differences in font size, date styles, and details in the Temple of Heaven design. These variations, combined with the annual design changes, have contributed to the growing collector interest and long term appeal of Gold Panda coins.

The series also includes special Gold Panda releases created for coin expositions. These pieces often feature modified panda artwork, additional decorative elements, or inscriptions referencing the exposition. In many cases, these coins were originally available only at the event itself, though some later appear on the broader collector market.
