Ghostbusters™
2024 celebrates the 40th anniversary of the classic 1980s film, Ghostbusters! Directed by Ivan Reitman and released in 1984, this film is a unique blend of horror comedy that ultimately defined the genre and launched one of the most enduring franchises in cinematic history.

Comedy greats Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray play oddball academics on the fringes of science with their research into the paranormal. It's the classic tale of pursuing the American dream, when their funding is cut and they're booted off campus for quackery, their small business startup begins to take shape. Their big idea? To use their scientific know-how to offer ghost catching services to the public. The premise is already humorous, but the combination of such unique characters makes for a fun and hilarious interplay between them.

First there's Dan Aykroyd's character, the brilliant, enthusiastic and deeply sincere Ray Stantz who tends to have a one track mind on his work. Next is Egon Spengler, played by Harold Ramis, a humorously humorless and deeply serious scientist whose genius creates the technology the Ghostbusters use to begin their enterprise. Then there's the lazier self-interested Peter Venkman, played by Bill Murray, whose interest in the paranormal seems more as a way to support himself with the least effort. His charming con-man personality and womanizing ways contrasts with the anti-social bookishness of the other two and makes him the leader and spokesman by default. Joining their team is layman Winston Zeddemore, just a working class guy looking for a job and finding much more than he bargained for. Rounding out the team is their secretary Janine Melnitz, played with a dry wit by Annie Potts. Their first serious client and focus of the plot is Dana Barrett, played by the lovely Sigourney Weaver, who plays another "straight man" role to the comedic oddballs that are the Ghostbusters. Dana's nerdy nextdoor neighbor, Louis Tully, is played by another comedy great, Rick Moranis for additional comedic relief.

The film was written by Dan Aykroyd originally to star him and John Belushi (ala Blues Brothers). Following Belushi's death, however, Harold Ramis assisted with a rewrite and would go on to play his staring role alongside Aykroyd. The film would have genuinely scary moments interspersed with the humorous dialogue of the characters for a unique and entertaining combination.

Special effects for the film were advanced for their time. Richard Edlund headed visual effects after he and his team had worked on the Star Wars series. Many practical effects and puppetry were used to bring forth the fantastical elements of the movie. One of the more iconic creations was the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, a mock corporate mascot come to life at immense proportions. These effects were achieved through a combination of puppetry, costume work and optical illusion.

The film's portrayal of well-developed characters with believable motivations placed into extraordinary circumstances created an unusual mix of comedy, horror and even some romance that proved to be a winning combination. The highly original film was a blockbuster hit at the box office and launched the franchise into orbit as a mainstay of popular culture. APMEX now celebrates 40 years of this classic movie with a range of precious metal products featuring its characters. Claim your unique collectible Ghostbusters keepsake today!
