Product Details
New from the Austrian Mint, Austria’s Unsung Heroines is dedicated to five of Austria’s great women who received far too little attention for their achievements in the arts and sciences.

The series explores what it meant to be a creative and talented woman in Austria during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, looks at the obstacles they had to overcome, and highlights the successes of the women featured in their five different fields.

Coin Highlights:
  • Contains 1/4 oz of .986 fine gold.
  • Coins are packaged in the original box with a certificate of authenticity.
  • Obverse: The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky in front of a stylised floor plan.
  • Reverse: The coin’s reverse is split between an image of the Frankfurt kitchen, which was just 1.9 metres in width, and a portrait of the aspiring young architect in which Margarete exudes the strength that she maintained well into old age. As put by contemporary Viennese architect Christine Zwingl: “Her courage, her joie de vivre, her warmth of heart and her humour influenced many.
  • Guaranteed by the Austrian Mint.

About Unsung Heroines
One of the first women to study architecture in Austria, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky showed great social commitment right from the start. “I never imagined building railway stations or cultural palaces,” she said. “I wanted to become an architect because I wanted to contribute to alleviating the housing problem.” In 1926, Margarete designed the ‘Frankfurt kitchen’, the prototype of the fitted kitchen, which was based on labour-saving criteria and remains a prime example of well-thought-out architecture to this day. The kitchen based on her plans was installed in around 10,000 flats and the fitted kitchen became the standard for interior design.

Born in Vienna in 1897, Margarete died there in the same neighbourhood 102 years later. “In 1916, nobody could have imagined that a woman would be commissioned to build a house – not even myself,” she later said. Yet Margarete managed to do so. Successful in a male-dominated field, an ambassador for humane architecture and an active member of the resistance against the Nazis, Margarete was all this and much more. In the post-war period, she organised exhibitions and took part in international architecture congresses and was also involved in both the peace and women’s movements.
