About Ozark Scenic Riverway
The Ozark National Scenic Riverways, established by Congress in 1964 and dedicated in 1971, protects Missouri’s Current and Jacks Fork rivers within its 80,000 acres, drawing 1.3 million annual visitors. Historically, the region was home to the Osage Nation, a powerful Midwestern tribe that migrated west due to Iroquois expansion. Known for their height and strength, the Osage controlled vast lands between the Missouri and Red rivers, relying on buffalo hunting and agriculture. The name "Osage" derives from a French adaptation of their indigenous name, Wazhazhe, meaning "Mid-waters." Meanwhile, Missouri’s name originates from the Missouria tribe, with interpretations ranging from "muddy water" to "town of the large canoes."
