About Oyster Island
The Statue of Liberty National Monument encompasses both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, located in New Jersey and New York. This iconic landmark includes the Statue of Liberty, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and the Statue of Liberty Museum. Ellis Island, known for its former immigration station, also houses the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital. Historically, the land was inhabited by the Lenape people, an indigenous group of the Northeastern Woodlands. Their territory spanned present-day New Jersey, New York City, and parts of Pennsylvania. The Lenape utilized Ellis Island and nearby Liberty Island for resources, particularly the rich oyster beds that once flourished in New York Harbor.

During the restoration of Ellis Island's immigration station in the 1980s, archaeologists uncovered significant evidence of Native American presence, including pottery fragments, arrowheads, and animal bones. These findings revealed how the indigenous peoples lived off the land, fishing in spring, harvesting shellfish in summer, and hunting year-round. The archaeological remains, such as shell middens, provided valuable insights into the Lenape’s diet and seasonal patterns. Their respectful use of the islands’ natural resources highlights the harmonious relationship they maintained with the land and wildlife long before European settlement.
