University of Missouri
University of Missouri (Mizzou), located in Columbia, Missouri, is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri System and one of the oldest public universities west of the Mississippi River, founded in 1839. It is classified as a R1 doctoral university, recognized for its high level of research activity, and offers more than 300 degree programs through its 13 colleges and schools. Mizzou is well-regarded for programs in journalism—home to the world’s first journalism school—the sciences, engineering, agriculture, and veterinary medicine. The campus is also known for its distinctive architecture and iconic landmarks like The Columns and Jesse Hall. Athletics are a core part of student and community life at the University of Missouri. The Missouri Tigers compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) at the NCAA Division I level, having joined the SEC in 2012. Mizzou’s athletic program features 20 varsity sports for men and women, and it boasts a proud tradition of competitive excellence. The football team, which plays in Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium, has earned several division titles and bowl appearances, especially during its early years in the SEC. Mizzou’s men’s and women’s basketball teams compete in the Mizzou Arena, with the men's program having a history of NCAA tournament success and the women's program gaining national prominence in recent years. Mizzou also has strong programs in wrestling, softball, track and field, and baseball, with numerous athletes going on to compete at professional and Olympic levels. The university’s mascot, Truman the Tiger, named after Missouri native President Harry S. Truman, is a beloved figure at games and campus events. The student section, known as "The Zou" during football games, and longstanding traditions like homecoming, which Mizzou claims to have originated in 1911, create a spirited and unified campus atmosphere.
