Check out these and more from the Native American Mint.

About Cumberland Island
Cumberland Island was home to the Tacatacuru, a coastal chiefdom of the Timucua, the largest Indigenous group in North Florida and Southeast Georgia. The Tacatacuru belonged to the Mocama subgroup of the Timucua and occupied Cumberland Island during the 16th and 17th centuries. Their territory stretched from the Altamaha River south into Florida, firmly placing Cumberland Island within the northern range of Timucua-speaking peoples.

Because of this, the island preserves important archaeological and cultural ties to the Timucua—including villages, trade networks, and ceremonial practices—making Cumberland Island a significant part of Timucuan history and heritage.
