El Dorado
The legend of the golden city of El Dorado has its origins in the 16th century, during the conquest of Latin America by the Spanish conquistadors. During the conquest of the Andes, the pre-Columbian natives shared part of their culture with the conquistadors, including certain ceremonies.
Although accounts of these ceremonies differ, they all describe a man covered in gold dust, offering large quantities of gold and jewels to a lake to appease the gods in the depths. Convinced of the existence of a hidden city of immense wealth, the conquistadors brought this tale back to Europe, and over the following decades, it sparked a lively interest in pre-Columbian culture, resulting in several expeditions to find El Dorado.
