St. Peter
St. Peter was one of the Twelve Apostles and a cornerstone of the early Christian Church. Born Simon, he was a fisherman by trade before being called by Jesus to become a “fisher of men.” Renamed Peter, meaning “rock,” he became a leader among the Apostles and is regarded by both Catholic and Orthodox traditions as the first Bishop of Rome—known as the first pope. According to Christian tradition, St. Peter was martyred in Rome under Emperor Nero, choosing to be crucified upside down out of humility.
