Spain & the Revolutionary War
While Spain didn't formally ally itself with the U.S., it was a critical behind-the-scenes supporter. Spain entered the war in 1779, declaring war on Britain as part of a broader conflict. Spain helped funnel weapons, gunpowder, food and money to American troops via the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast. They also helped tie up British forces by launching attacks. Spain provided critical funding, supplies and safe ports, which sustained the revolutionary effort during some of its most difficult moments.
