Agatha Christie
Born in 1890, Agatha Christie is one of the world's most widely read authors and remains an iconic figure in crime fiction. After several literary failures, she found success with The Mysterious Affair at Styles, published in 1920, which marked the first appearance of the famous detective Hercule Poirot. Later, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, triumphed selling nearly 8,000 copies. She went on to publish one or two novels a year, establishing her work as an essential reference.
Renowned for the subtlelty of her plots, the richness of her characters and the extreme care she took with details, Agatha Christie captivated millions of readers with her art of twists and turns, red herrings and cleverly concealed clues. She is still recognized today as the "Queen of Crime", her works continuing to inspire literature, theater and cinema.
Art of the Pen
In 2021, Monnaie de Paris inaugurated a series focused on literary styles and authors who have marked literature history in France and abroad. Each year, a different literary style is highlighted, including poetry, novels, philosophical essays and theatre. Authors who have left their mark on that year's literary style are celebrated. A common reverse to this series is developed. After celebrating poetry in 2021 and threatre in 2022, Monnaie de Paris will honor more authors in 2024.
Monnaie de Paris
Founded in 1864, not only is Monnaie de Paris France's longest standing institution, but it is also the oldest enterprise in the world. Today, the mint strikes circulation coins for France, as well as beautiful gold and silver commemorative coin programs that are each intricately designed works of art. The mint is also home to a museum that hosts exhibitions, tours and workshops as well as the Guy Savoy Restaurant.
In this release from the Art of the Quill series, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to Agatha Christie's incredible legacy 50 years after her passing.
Coin Highlights:
- Contains 1 oz of .999 fine silver.
- Mintage of 3,000 coins.
- Comes in a box and with a certificate of authenticity from the Monnaie de Paris.
- Obverse: Depicts Agatha Christie surrounded by references to her iconic works. Her posture, chin resting on her hand and eyes pensive, evokes a writer deep in thought. The index and middle fingers of the hand on which her head rests are raised in a position that reminds of a revolver. She hold a fountain pen between these two fingers. The queen of crime is thus depicted as the embodiment of her universe, ready to draw her pen and put a new subtle plot down on paper. Around her, one can recognize references to the novels And Then There Were None, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder on the Orient Express, and Death on the Nile. The authors name, dates and year are inscribed around her.
- Reverse: Features several iconic quotations can be read, such as Voltaire’s “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien”, Dante Alighieri’s “Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate ”, William Shakespeare’s “To be or not to be: that is the question” or Nietzsche’s “Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich starker”. A feather is engraved in the center of the coin and underneath is the title of the series.
- Certified by the Monnaie de Paris.
