Goldbacks resemble standard paper currency in shape but are made with thin layers of 24-karat gold. Initially introduced in Utah following the Utah Legal Tender Act of 2019, they serve as a voluntary currency, allowing transactions at the vendor's discretion. Since then, additional states have each launched their own Goldbacks in subsequent years, with Idaho recently becoming the eighth state to adopt this unique form of currency.
Currency Highlights:
- Contains 1/2000 oz (0.0005 oz) of .999 fine gold.
- Individual notes are housed in an currency sleeve or sealed pouch.
- Face: Depicts Sacagawea as Pietas, carrying her infant son while standing along the Lolo Trail, with the Bitterroot Mountains, an Appaloosa mare and foal, and Idaho state symbols surrounding the scene.

The Idaho Half Goldback
The Idaho 1/2 Goldback honors the virtue Pietas, or Devotion, through the story of Sacagawea, an Agaidika Shoshone woman born near Lemhi Pass in present-day Idaho. Her life reflects a deep devotion to family, people and homeland. As a young girl, Sacagawea was captured by a Hidatsa war party and taken far from her homeland. Years later, she traveled west again as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, unknowingly returning toward the land and people from whom she had been separated.
In 1805, the expedition reached Lemhi Pass, where Sacagawea recognized the terrain and realized they had entered Shoshone territory. There she was reunited with her brother, Chief Cameahwait. Through this family connection, the expedition secured horses necessary to cross the Bitterroot Mountains. Their route followed the Lolo Trail, a challenging path long known to Indigenous peoples. In the artwork, the words “Lolo Trail” and the year 1805 are carved into rocks, marking the pivotal moment when Sacagawea’s devotion helped ensure the expedition’s survival.
Sacagawea served as an interpreter and guide for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, helping negotiate for food, identify safe routes and communicate peaceful intentions with Indigenous tribes. Throughout the journey, she carried her infant son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, whose presence helped signal that the expedition traveled in peace.
At the center of the design, Sacagawea stands as a symbol of maternal strength, carrying her child in a cradleboard as a visual expression of Pietas. She wears traditional Shoshone clothing, including a beaded belt and tool bag, reflecting her cultural heritage. In the background, an Appaloosa mare and foal mirror Sacagawea’s devotion to her child while honoring Idaho’s state horse.
The Bitterroot Mountains rise in the distance as Lolo Creek winds through the valley. Idaho’s state symbols surround the scene, including white pine, huckleberries and mountain bluebirds, grounding the design firmly in the state’s natural landscape.
Inscribed along the bottom of the design is the quotation:
“Everything I do is for my people.”
The Goldback® is a revolutionary form of currency crafted from 24-karat gold, offering a reliable alternative as the American dollar continues to lose value. Each Goldback is designed to preserve purchasing power over time, addressing the age-old “small coin problem” by allowing people to make everyday transactions with real gold. While inflation erodes the value of paper currency, the Goldback’s intrinsic gold content ensures that it will hold its worth.
Recognized as legal tender in states like Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, and now Idaho; Goldbacks can be traded or bartered like other non-current forms of currency worldwide. This currency blends gold’s enduring value with modern craftsmanship, providing a versatile and practical means of exchange that won’t depreciate, making it a sound choice for those seeking stability in their everyday spending.
