About Idaho 2 Goldback
The Idaho 2 Goldback honors the virtue Civitas, or Community, through the deeply rooted story of Boise’s Basque community. The scene is set on the Basque Block in downtown Boise, where dancers perform the traditional Gipuzkoa hoop dance known as Uztai Txiki (Arco Dantza). Holding ribbon-adorned wooden hoops, their synchronized movements symbolize shared purpose and unity.

Civitas stands at the center of the design. Beneath her feet is the Boise Basque cross, the locally recognized lauburu, tying the artwork directly to the city and honoring a community that preserved its cultural identity while becoming an integral part of Idaho.

The Boise Mountains rise in the background as sheep stand nearby, referencing the late nineteenth-century Basque immigrants who worked as sheepherders across Idaho’s open ranges. In the distance, the Idaho State Capitol represents the community’s lasting civic and economic contributions. The Basque Museum and Cultural Center appears as a tribute to the preservation of language, history, and tradition.

Today, Boise is home to one of the largest Basque communities in the United States. Reviewed with input from representatives of the Idaho Basque Museum, this design reflects a Basque principle that resonates strongly with Idaho: “Denon artean egina, erraz egina.”
