Goldbacks resemble standard paper currency in shape but are made with thin layers of 24-karat gold. Initially introduced in Utah following the Utah Legal Tender Act of 2019, they serve as a voluntary currency, allowing transactions at the vendor's discretion. Since then, additional states have each launched their own Goldbacks in subsequent years, with Idaho recently becoming the eighth state to adopt this unique form of currency.
Currency Highlights:
- Contains 1/40 oz (0.025 oz) of .999 fine gold.
- Individual notes are housed in a protective plastic sleeve.
- Face: Depicts a scientist before a chalkboard of nuclear equations with four glowing bulbs, commemorating the 1951 moment when EBR-I in Arco, Idaho produced the world’s first electricity from nuclear power.

About the Idaho 25 Goldback
The Idaho 25 Goldback depicts one of the most important scientific breakthroughs of the twentieth century through the virtue Scientia, or knowledge and understanding. At a time when nuclear energy was still experimental and closely scrutinized worldwide, Idaho stepped forward to prove what was possible. On December 20, 1951, Experimental Breeder Reactor I in Arco, Idaho became the first power plant in the world to generate electricity with nuclear energy, lighting four bulbs as proof that peaceful atomic power was achievable. Four years later, on July 17, 1955, electricity from the BORAX-III reactor powered the entire city of Arco for one hour, making it the first city in the world lit by nuclear power.
The female scientist in the artwork references Idaho’s contributions to science and engineering, including women working at the highest levels of research. The equations on the board behind her were critical to this moment in history. E = mc², published by Albert Einstein in 1905, calculates the immense energy within matter and is foundational to nuclear science. The other equation (²³5U + ¹n ? ¹4¹Ba + ?²Kr + 3¹n + energy) is the precise fission reaction that made history on that day in Arco.
This breakthrough established Idaho as a global leader in peaceful atomic research. The National Reactor Testing Station, later renamed the Idaho National Laboratory, went on to host more than fifty experimental reactors and remains central to U.S. energy and security research today. In 1966, EBR-I was designated a National Historic Landmark, formally recognizing its worldwide significance.
Written on the note is a quote from Idaho native Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of television: “There’s nothing worth knowing that isn’t difficult.”
Goldbacks
The Goldback® is a revolutionary form of currency crafted from 24-karat gold, offering a reliable alternative as the American dollar continues to lose value. Each Goldback is designed to preserve purchasing power over time, addressing the age-old “small coin problem” by allowing people to make everyday transactions with real gold. While inflation erodes the value of paper currency, the Goldback’s intrinsic gold content ensures that it will hold its worth.
Recognized as legal tender in states like Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, and now Idaho; Goldbacks can be traded or bartered like other non-current forms of currency worldwide. This currency blends gold’s enduring value with modern craftsmanship, providing a versatile and practical means of exchange that won’t depreciate, making it a sound choice for those seeking stability in their everyday spending.

There are 5 or 6 Goldbacks that clearly are in a class of their own artistically speaking. This is one of them. Spend the ugly ones and frame this one.
