Goldbacks resemble standard paper currency in shape but are made with thin layers of 24-karat gold. Initially introduced in Utah following the Utah Legal Tender Act of 2019, they serve as a voluntary currency, allowing transactions at the vendor's discretion. Since then, additional states have each launched their own Goldbacks in subsequent years, with Idaho recently becoming the eighth state to adopt this unique form of currency.
Currency Highlights:
- Contains 1/20 oz (0.05 oz) of .999 fine gold.
- Individual notes are housed in a protective sleeve or sealed pouch.
- Face: Features a woman fly fishing at Redfish Lake beneath the Sawtooth Mountains, with cutthroat trout below the water, an osprey overhead and a moose in the shallows, symbolizing patience in Idaho’s wilderness.
- Made in the USA by Goldback Inc., using proprietary Aurum® technology to create durable, gold-backed currency.

About Arizona 50 Goldback
The Idaho 50 Goldback presents the virtue Patientia, patience, through Idaho’s long-standing relationship with its land and waters. The state contains more designated wilderness than any other state in the lower forty-eight, and access to fishing, hunting, rafting, skiing, and backcountry travel remains part of everyday life.
The artwork is set at Redfish Lake, which sits above 6,500 feet in elevation and lies within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This region is known for clean lakes, extensive trail systems, and intact alpine landscapes. It draws anglers, hikers, climbers, paddlers, and skiers from across the country.
In the scene, a woman is fly fishing in cold, clear mountain water that’s fed by snowmelt. The Sawtooth Mountains rise sharply in the background. Cutthroat trout, Idaho’s state fish, swim beneath the surface of the lake, sustained by protected watersheds. An osprey circles above while a moose stands quietly in the shallows behind the angler. This scene is realistic to central Idaho, where people and wildlife often share the same spaces.
Outdoor recreation is woven into Idaho’s identity, and participation requires time and attention. Patientia reflects that patience, which is shaped by long days outside and learning through experience. Written into the scene is the scripture “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently.”
Goldbacks
The Goldback® is a revolutionary form of currency crafted from 24-karat gold, offering a reliable alternative as the American dollar continues to lose value. Each Goldback is designed to preserve purchasing power over time, addressing the age-old “small coin problem” by allowing people to make everyday transactions with real gold. While inflation erodes the value of paper currency, the Goldback’s intrinsic gold content ensures that it will hold its worth.
Recognized as legal tender in states like Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, and now Idaho can be traded or bartered like other non-current forms of currency worldwide. This currency blends gold’s enduring value with modern craftsmanship, providing a versatile and practical means of exchange that won’t depreciate, making it a sound choice for those seeking stability in their everyday spending.
