2025 Libertad Release
The 2025 Libertad coin release is historic due to its extremely low mintages and the complete absence of gold coins—a first for the series. In stark contrast to previous years, where the 1 oz silver BU Libertad often had mintages over 300,000 (e.g., ~437,000 in 2021), the 2025 version is limited to just 500 coins. Other sizes are equally scarce: the 5 oz BU silver Libertad is limited to 200 coins, and the ¼ oz BU version to only 100 coins. These unprecedented lows have made 2025 one of the rarest Libertad years ever, with collector demand and secondary market prices expected to surge accordingly.
2 oz Silver Libertads
The Silver Libertad was released in a 2 oz Brilliant Uncirculated version for the first time in 1996. These coins tend to have much lower mintages than their 1 oz counterparts, adding to the collectibility of the series. These 2 oz Libertad coins in .999 fine silver feature the coat of arms of Mexico on the obverse, surrounded by the historical Mexican coats of arms. The reverse features the two volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, which have a legendary love story tied to them. The legend based on Aztec mythology tells the story of these two volcanoes, who were once star-crossed lovers - the princess Iztaccíhuatl and the brave warrior Popocatépetl. Iztaccíhuatl's father demands that Popocatépetl defeat their enemy before taking the princess as his bride. While the brave warrior fights and defeats the enemy, a rival spreads false news to the ruler that Popocatépetl has been defeated. When Iztaccíhuatl learns of this, she falls ill and dies from heartbreak. The Gods turn the humans to these two mountains so that the two lovers can finally be together.
Mexican Mint
The Libertads are produced at La Casa de Moneda de Mexico (Mexican Mint), the oldest mint in North America. It is also the national mint of Mexico, first established in 1535. The Bank of Mexico is Mexico's central bank, and is the Mexican Mint's largest client, producing circulating coinage and currency for the country as well as precious metal coins. The Mexican Mint is located in Mexico City.
