About the Deadly and Dangerous Series
The Perth Mint was commissioned to produce the Deadly and Dangerous series in 2006. The series celebrates some of the most terrifying and hazardous of species that are home to Australia. The first coin in the Deadly and Dangerous Coin Series showcased the Red-Backed spider in vibrant colorization. Coins are struck in the country of issue as Tuvalu and with a $1 denomination. A myriad of creatures have graced the annual coin design, including: the White Shark, Blue-Ringed Octopus, Saltwater Crocodile, Eastern Brown Snake, Box Jelly Fish, Spider-Hunting Scorpion, Bull Ant, Death Adder, Tiger Shark, the Blue Bottle, otherwise known as the Man o' War and Tiger Shark. In 2026, The Perth Mint selected the Giant Centipede to highlight, along with the 20th release, showcasing highly venomous the Red-Back Spider.

About the Red Back Spider
The Red-Back spider is on of Australia's most recognizable and venomous arachnids, knowns for the distinctive red stripe located on the female's black abdomen. Closely related to the black widow spider, the Red-Back spider is commonly found in warm, dry environments, often hiding in sheds, outdoor furniture, mailboxes and garages. These Red-Back spider bites can cause pain, sweating, nausea and muscle weakness upon impact. Thankfully fatalities are now rare amongst humans thanks to the development of anti-venom treatments.
