The Wow! Signal
The Wow! signal was a strong narrowband radio signal detected on August 15, 1977 by astronomer Jerry Ehhman at Ohio State University's Big Ear radio telescope, as part of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence project.

What happened: Ehman was reviewing printouts of radio telescope data days after the observation. The signal stood out so dramatically that he circled it and wrote "Wow!" in the margin, giving it its name. It lasted 72 seconds (the full window the telescope could observe any point in the sky) and it matched almost exactly the expected signature of an interstellar signal. Its intensity was 30 times stronger than background noise It appeared to come from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius
