Beautiful Gold Color

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I love the color of the gold in all Gold Eagles. It really looks like gold, unlike the dull gold color of the Krugerrand. They are a few mint problems with some 2014 GAE (such as different shade spots but this does not decrease nor increase the value. All in all, I love this coin. All American Eagles are 22K gold, but it has a history of being the number one selling gold bullion. They are very easy to buy, sell or trade because of its popularity. Spot price is as low as any other, including generic 1 oz gold bars if you shop around. APMEX is famous for their quality, huge inventory and variety, shipping in well protected packages and I often get the pretty APMEX box for storage. One thing that I never knew has to do with the weight of gold and will briefly describe below. My first purchase of a 1 oz Gold Eagle was in early 2014. I purchased it through an APMEX auction and knew it was "The Real Deal." I briefly looked at this beautiful bullion and placed it in the safe with my collection. Two and a half years later I was testing a few 1 ozt Australian Kooks because I got them from an individual Ebay seller and needed to know if they were authentic. They passed the slide magnet test and weighted perfect at 1 ozt. For the same reason I decided to weigh some gold 1 ozt Krugerrands. The scale gave me a reading of 1.09 troy oz. I thought I made a big mistake and begin to panic. I then thought of weighing this 2014 Gold Eagle to test my scale. My scale gave me the same weight of 1.09 on this Apmex Eagle. I quickly called APMEX and the polite Customer Service Rep told me "Not to worry, your coin actually is the perfect at Gross Weight of 1.09 troy oz."

Durable American Gold coin

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

This Gold American Eagle coin is one of my top 3 favorite coins. It's probably not in my top two (that would be Gold American Eagle and Gold Canadian Maple Leaf) but this coin is right up there. While it's not 24k Gold it's 22 karat (.9167). It is 3% silver and also has a little over 5% copper in it as well. All of which make for an interesting gold color with slight copper hue tint to it. I would recommend this coin to everyone.

  • Attractive Design
  • Durable
  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Recognized Brand
  • Mint Condition
  • Easy to Sell
  • Bottom Line
  • Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

First time disappointed. Damaged coin.

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

There is a first time for everything it seems. I have purchased many BU coins from APMEX with complete quality satisfaction and delivery by them in the past. However, my last purchase of a 1 oz Gold Eagle came in damaged. It has a small scuff mark about the size of a pencil eraser below the eagle talons and a small ding near the rim, not exactly BU condition. I realize after opening the box it became my word against theirs as to condition.I should have looked it over without taking it out of the flip. Overall I will continue buying from APMEX - but this is one bad mark as to quality delivered.

Merchant response: Dan: This is unacceptable. We pride ourselves on our quality and you should have never received a damaged coin. We also pride ourselves on our customer service. Our team will be reaching out to you soon in an effort to exchange the coin for one in expected condition. Thank you for your review and your continued customer partnership.

eagle

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Got my gold eagle and tube of silver ones. My favorite design. As someone mentioned before I definitely can see a "dull" spot on the eagle side of the coin in the center which is not an issue with prior years. Hopefully this won't be an issue with '15 eagles. As for the 22k vs 24k debate... people need to look at the buy-back prices. You'll get the same $$$ for these eagles when you sell them as you would for a 24k coin. As always, happy with Apmex service and also like what they've done with their website.

"Flaw" in 2014's?

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

The "flaw" in the 2014's, mentioned elsewhere, is not a flaw specific to 2014. The dies that are used seem to wear prematurely above and below the flying eagle on the reverse. I have 2014's that are perfect, and I have 2014's that exhibit the "rough" surface areas that reviewers have noticed. I have seen this same issue with other years. The dies are not being replaced soon enough. The Silver Eagles have the same issue - in fact, it is much worse. Sometimes the Silver Eagles are mostly matte with only small patches of sheen here and there. The U.S. Mint is trying to save money by not switching dies until absolutely necessary. This results in some surface inconsistencies.

  • Recognized Brand
  • Easy to Sell
  • Cons
  • Worn Dies Being Used

Have been a coin collector and bullion. Buyer a long time and when i bought i assumed that the Gold Eagle coin was .9999 pure but after reading a unhappy review that these gold eagles are only .9167 pure i also am unhappy i should have bought the Gold buffalos they are .9999 pure not Apmex fault Apmex is a Great company very professional dont hesitate buying anything from them .

Merchant response: We apologize if the specifications section of our product page that lists the fineness of the coin was not clear. Keep in mind that the coin is still one ounce of Gold. This is just how the U.S. Government decided to mint these coins. Know that you can always reach out to customer service at 800-375-9006 and they'll be happy to answer any questions or solve any issues.
