The history of Gold Buffalo coins
Gold Buffalo coins are minted featuring a modification of James Earle Fraser’s iconic design for the Indian Head nickel. The Gold Buffalo coin’s modified design is regarded as one of the best of any U.S. coin and was even used on the 2001 Smithsonian commemorative coin. The obverse of the American Gold Buffalo showcases a Native American who Fraser said is a mixture of chiefs from different tribes. Three chiefs posed for Fraser before he designed the profile found on these American Gold coins: Big Tree, a war chief of the Kiowa; Iron Tail, an Oglala Lakota performer in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show; and Two Moons, one of the Cheyenne chiefs who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn against the U.S. Army.
Why invest in 1 oz Gold Buffalo coins?
Gold Buffalo coins are popular with investors around the world for their high .9999 fine Gold content, with a beautiful design as an added bonus. Although Gold Buffalo coins have a face value of $50, the purchase price is based on the value of the raw unfabricated Gold, known as the spot price, which no one pays when buying Gold. The price of Gold you pay includes the premium price, or the premium over spot price, and it includes the cost of fabrication, distribution, a small dealer fee and any numismatic or collector value. These American Gold Buffalos and other Precious Metal coins hold their value even when paper investments falter. When you choose American Gold coins or any other Gold coins, you join others who see Gold bullion as an investment that maintains its value over time.

The modern Gold Buffalo, an investment coin prized around the world, is named for the buffalo featured on the reverse. Depicted on Gold Buffalo coins of today, as well as the vintage 1913 Buffalo Nickel, is the profile of a buffalo widely believed to be Black Diamond, a buffalo that lived in New York City’s Central Park Zoo during the 1910s. The vintage and modern American Gold Buffalo coin design might not exist without the assistance of an unknown person that some people believe Fraser relied on to distract Black Diamond. Without someone to distract Black Diamond, Fraser could not have gotten the profile he wanted for the coin design, which is commemorated on the modern American Gold coins.
