Got this to compliment another sovereign i already own. A year ago they were out of my budget so I waited for the price to drop and bought one and then this one. For a 140 year old coin it is in almost mint condition. I did pay an upcharge, but not a crazy amount to get a coin that old, in near mint condition. For me it is a fantastic way to invest in a little history as well, other than buying bullion bars.
- Pros
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

I received a coin dated 1866 advertised as being a minimum AU. I returned the coin because in my opinion it graded less than AU. I graded the coin XF-40 due to wear on the obverse and reverse. I am in the process of obtaining a refund. It should be noted that I have purchased many coins from AMPEX and have had to return only a small portion over the years. The return policy is the best in the business and the staff is great. My advice: these coins are wonderful historical coins. Just watch the grading.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Easy to Sell
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Absolutely gorgeous. Lustrous as a new Gold Eagle and a hell of a lot cooler. Mine appeared BU - haven't put it under a loupe yet, but there is no obvious flattening or any sort of wear. Mine was an 1878 - not a rare one, but not the most common either. Sure I paid more for it than a 1/4-oz. private mint bar, but I bought 140 years of history with the gold content. Add one to your stack, you'll be happy.
- Pros
- Attractive Design
- Mint Condition
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
