the principles Curtis, Perry, and Ward out of the remnants of Moffat & Company. The company held a government contract to suppliment the shortage of circulating coinage in California. United States Assayer Augustus Humbert (who had previously had his name and title affixed to private issue Gold coins) worked with the Assay Office of Gold in an official capacity and provided credibility to the private issues.All US Assay Office coins are RARE!
The obverse depicts an eagle with wings outstreatched, a banner inscribed with LIBERTY in its beak, a shield and cluster of arrows in one claw, and an olive branch in the other. A banner marked 884 THOUS (the purity) is above the eagle, and the whole device is encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TEN DOLS.
The reverse displays a patterned seal very similar to those used by Humbert on early coins, with a swirl pattern and the insignia: UNITED STATES ASSAY OFFICE OF Gold SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA 1852.
This example displays light wear against the somewhat soft strike that was very typical of many of these coins. Color is green-Gold on the obverse and a touch lighter on the reverse. Contact marks are as expected on an AU coin. A nice affordable example of this popular issue!
