Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans are a professional football team based in Nashville, Tennessee, competing in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the AFC South division. The franchise was originally founded in 1960 as the Houston Oilers, one of the charter teams of the American Football League (AFL). The Oilers won the first two AFL championships before joining the NFL in 1970 during the AFL–NFL merger. In 1997, the team relocated to Tennessee, first playing as the Tennessee Oilers before officially becoming the Titans in 1999. The Titans’ most notable season came in 1999, when they reached Super Bowl XXXIV in their first year under the new name. In one of the most dramatic finishes in Super Bowl history, the Titans fell just one yard short of tying the St. Louis Rams on the game’s final play. The franchise has also been known for memorable playoff moments, such as the “Music City Miracle” in the 1999 AFC Wild Card Game—a stunning last-second kickoff return touchdown that remains one of the most iconic plays in NFL history. The franchise has produced standout players over the years, including Hall of Famers Earl Campbell and Bruce Matthews during the Oilers era, and Titans stars like Steve McNair, Eddie George, and more recently Derrick Henry, one of the most dominant running backs in the modern NFL. Under head coach Mike Vrabel, the Titans have remained consistent contenders in the AFC, highlighted by a run to the AFC Championship Game in the 2019 season. With a history that spans two cities and identities, the Tennessee Titans represent both the legacy of the Houston Oilers and the modern football culture of Nashville. Known for toughness, memorable playoff moments, and star players, the Titans have carved out a strong identity as one of the NFL’s most competitive and resilient franchises.
