Goldbacks resemble standard paper currency in shape but are made with thin layers of 24-karat gold. Initially introduced in Utah following the Utah Legal Tender Act of 2019, they serve as a voluntary currency, allowing transactions at the vendor's discretion. Since then, additional states have each launched their own Goldbacks in subsequent years, with Idaho recently becoming the eighth state to adopt this unique form of currency.
Currency Highlights:
- Contains 1/200 (0.005 oz) of .999 fine gold.

About the Idaho Five Goldback
The Idaho 5 Goldback honors the virtue Clementia, representing mercy, gentleness, and stewardship. The design depicts a moment of renewal in the Wallace Mountains following the devastating Great Fire of 1910, one of the largest wildfires in American history.
At the center of the composition, Clementia kneels on scorched earth as she plants young saplings where the forest once stood. A small fawn stands beside her, symbolizing the return of life and innocence after destruction. Nearby rests an empty patera, a traditional symbol of mercy.
The Great Fire of 1910, often called the Big Burn, consumed millions of acres across northern Idaho and surrounding states, destroying towns such as Wallace and Avery. The disaster became a turning point for forest conservation and wildfire policy in the United States, shaping the role of the U.S. Forest Service and modern forest management.
This design reflects Idaho’s response to that tragedy through resilience, restoration, and a renewed commitment to stewarding the land. Clementia represents the spirit of rebuilding and renewal that followed the fire.
Inscribed along the bottom of the design is the enduring principle:
“Beauty for ashes.” — Isaiah 61:3
Goldbacks
The Goldback® is a revolutionary form of currency crafted from 24-karat gold, offering a reliable alternative as the American dollar continues to lose value. Each Goldback is designed to preserve purchasing power over time, addressing the age-old “small coin problem” by allowing people to make everyday transactions with real gold. While inflation erodes the value of paper currency, the Goldback’s intrinsic gold content ensures that it will hold its worth.
Recognized as legal tender in states like Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona and now Idaho; Goldbacks can be traded or bartered like other non-current forms of currency worldwide. This currency blends gold’s enduring value with modern craftsmanship, providing a versatile and practical means of exchange that won’t depreciate, making it a sound choice for those seeking stability in their everyday spending.
