South African Mint
In 1886, gold was discovered near the Witwatersrand area of Johannesburg and President Paul Kruger decided to establish a national mint. The South African Mint makes Proof Krugerrands and works with the Rand Refinery to mint the popular bullion Krugerrand. The mint generates coins on behalf of and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank. Today, the South African Mint is one of the world's top exporting mints.
Proof Gold Krugerrands are always tougher to come by than their business strike counterparts. Mintage is only 13,000 coins worldwide.
