In 1999, the West Point Mint accidentally produced what may become one of the most important rarities of the 20th century by striking a limited quantity of Uncirculated 1/4 oz. American Eagle Gold coins with the "W" mint mark below the date. Normally the mint mark appears only on Proof versions and in this case, the dies never received the special polishing that gives Proof coins their deep, mirrorlike qualities.

A Great 20th Century Rarity

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

The 1999-W MS American Gold Eagles are one of the great mint errors (or were they intentional?) of the 20th Century. Appearing during the run-up to the Year 2K, when demand for gold bullion coins was quite high; the estimated mintage on these coins is quite low. The more that you research these coins the more interesting, and desirable, they become.

  • Pros
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Mint Condition
  • Recognized Brand
  • Bottom Line
  • Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
