South African Mint
In 1886, gold was discovered near the Witwatersrand area of Johannesburg and President Paul Kruger decided to establish a national mint. The South African Mint manufactures Proof Krugerrands and works with the Rand Refinery to mint the bullion Krugerrands. The mint produces coins on behalf of and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank. Today, the South African Mint remains one of the world's top exporting mints.
In September 1980, the three smaller mass produced Krugerrands (1/2 oz 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz) were launched giving more people the opportunity to invest in Precious Metals at a lower price point.
