The History of Gold American Eagles
The Gold American Eagle coin has a fascinating history. The modern coins, like this 2018 1 oz Gold American Eagle BU, are adapted from the designs of renowned artist and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. His original work was used on the Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. The redesign of the coin was requested by President Theodore Roosevelt due to his desire for more beautiful American coinage. President Roosevelt asked his personal friend, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to complete this coin art. This led to the revered design we know today, recognized by many to be the most beautiful American coin ever minted. The obverse of the American Gold Eagle features an image of Lady Liberty, representing victory. Liberty bears a torch to symbolize enlightenment and an olive branch to represent peace, against a background of sunrays and the United States Capitol. The reverse of the coin shows a scene of a bald eagle pair with their young in a patriotic representation of family and strength.Gold Eagle coins minted from 1986 through 1991 are dated with Roman numerals whereas every 1 oz Gold American Eagle minted after 1992 is marked with Arabic numerals. These Gold bullion coins are available in several fractional sizes including 1/10 troy oz, 1/4 troy oz and 1/2 troy oz as well as the best-known 1 troy oz size. Each iteration of this coin is identical in design save the markings on the reverse side of the coin indicating its weight and face value.
The American Gold Eagle is minted at the West Point Mint in New York. The mint deals in large amounts of Precious Metals and is responsible for striking all proof and uncirculated American Eagles in Gold, Silver and Platinum as well as all Gold commemorative coins.
