The Original GM Logo
The third time the General Motors logo was changed was in 1967. It became more simple than its predecessor and showed a blue square with rounded corners with a white underlined "GM" wordmark underneath. The wordmark used to only be "GM" lettering in a conventional Helvetica typeface.

Although this logo style was popular for a considerable time, the designers took out most of the components to make it more basic and shake things up. All that was needed to complete the design was the acronym and a white underline with a blue background. Additionally, the limits of the surrounding square were taken away in 2001.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, a glossy 3D effect was used to enhance the simple watermark, as well as the bounds of a square, and eventually even a metallic 3D effect.

This basic and modern GM logo is instantly recognizable and helped establish the company as an innovative business.

General Motors: An American Icon
General Motors, or GM, is an American multinational corporation that designs and sells vehicles, vehicle parts, and systems for the passenger and commercial markets.

It was founded in Flint, Michigan in 1908 and now has over 209,000 employees. GM makes automobiles and trucks in 35 countries across the world, but it started out with humble beginnings. Harley Earl designed the company's first car: the Chevrolet Chassis.

GM played a significant part in the United States' World War II efforts. During WWII, the company manufactured weapons for the Allies, including vehicles, tanks, and planes. In 1940, William S. Knudsen, the president of General Motors, worked for Franklin D. Roosevelt and oversaw the United States' total war production. By 1942, all of GM's output was focused on the war. Over the years, the firm has provided employment to a large number of individuals. In fact, there are over 1.7 million workers employed in the automobile sector in the United States. This shows just how important GM is to the American economy. It's the most populous automobile manufacturer in the United States and has been the world's major carmaker for more than 70 years.
