The Morgan Silver Dollar has always held a special place in American coinage, a design that resonates deeply with collectors. Envisioned by George T. Morgan, an English engraver, its obverse presents a captivating rendition of Lady Liberty, modeled by Anna Willess Williams, her portrait both graceful and strong. Morgan’s subtle initial, a small 'M', can be found near the truncation of her neck, a quiet signature on a truly iconic image. The reverse features a majestic eagle, wings spread in a posture of strength and vigilance, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with another 'M' hidden within the ribbon's loop.
For decades, from 1878 to 1904, and then briefly in 1921, the Morgan Dollar served as a significant piece of commerce, embodying America's industrial growth and the era's silver boom. The New Orleans Mint, operating from 1838 to 1861 and again from 1879 to 1909, played a unique role in this history, striking millions of these silver dollars, identifiable by their distinct "O" mint mark. This facility, notably the only U.S. Mint to have produced both U.S. and Confederate coinage, became a symbol of Southern economic vitality and resilience.
In 2021, the U.S. Mint honored the 100th anniversary of the original Morgan Dollar's final production with a series of commemorative reissues. This particular coin, the 2021 Silver Morgan Dollar, proudly displays an "(O)" privy mark. While the New Orleans Mint building now functions as a museum, this 'O' isn't a traditional mint mark but rather a special tribute to that historic branch mint, connecting to its past. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this modern interpretation faithfully recreates Morgan's celebrated design with contemporary precision.
This stunning example has been graded MS-69 by PCGS, indicating a coin with a sharp strike and full original luster, showing only very minor imperfections. Its FirstStrike® designation confirms it was among the earliest coins certified by PCGS, often meaning superior preservation. Crafted from .999 fine silver and containing 0.858 troy ounces of precious metal, this 1-dollar denomination coin has a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 6.2 mm. With a limited mintage of just 175,000, this 2021-(O) Silver Morgan Dollar showcases American numismatic artistry, appealing to those who appreciate a blend of historical homage and modern minting excellence.
