Beginning in 2007, the Perth Mint introduced the Silver Koala series in both Gold and Silver. Each year features a different design of this animal that is so strongly associated with Australia. This year features a new Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Australian Silver Koala coins are produced in both 1 oz and 1 kilogram size, with the mintage of the 1 oz size capped at just 300,000 coins. This makes the Australian Silver Koala one of the most collectible bullion series. The Koala, along with the Kookaburra, Lunar Series, and Kangaroo form what has continued to be a robust line of high quality bullion products from the Perth Mint of Australia.

When early European settlers first encountered koalas in Australia, they thought the tree-climbing animals were monkeys or bears. Even though they're still referred to by some as "koala bears", they're actually marsupials like kangaroos and wombats.

Koalas have special physical characteristics that complement their tree-dwelling lifestyle. They're able to grip branches and pick eucalyptus leaves with their two opposable digits, and their tough skin and sharp claws provide traction in climbing. They even have extra thick fur on their seat so they can sit comfortably on branches for hours! Unique to Australia, these animals are a perfect theme for an iconic coin series.

Koalas Depicted on Australian Silver Coins

The Australian Silver Koala 1 oz coin has a reputation for being the most famous to be produced by The Perth Mint. One of the reasons for the popularity of this bullion coin is the original, exclusive koala artwork that appears on new editions each year. This beautiful series is known for depicting one of Australia’s most-beloved marsupials, the koala, in natural surroundings. Because these coins are so impeccably made, each arrives in protective casing to help maintain integrity and finish. With each annual release, the mintage is limited, which is why so many collectors purchase the coinage as soon as it becomes available.

Bullion coins that feature iconic imagery from Australia captivate collectors in a unique way. Because a variety of species of plants and animals are exclusive to this island continent, these pieces are immediately recognizable as collectible coins from the land Down Under. Followers of British Royalty have reason to collect this remarkable Silver bullion, as well.

Designing Silver Koala Coins from the Perth Mint

Each 2019 Silver Australian Koala coin has a face value of $1 AUD, guaranteed by the Australian government. The reverse is struck with a captivating Koala koala design that is sure to please both collectors and nature enthusiasts alike. The inscriptions "Australian Koala", The Perth Mint's "P" mintmark, and the 2019 year can also be found. A likeness of Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse, adding a sense of authenticity and refinement. The portrait of Her Majesty was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, and first appeared on British coins minted in 1998. The 2019 Koala coins mark the 13th issuance of the series, but only the second release to be made with .9999 fine Silver bullion.

The marsupial depicted on the 2019 Australian Koala 1 oz Silver Coin eats primarily so many Eucalyptus leaves, so many that they typically smell like the plant.
