American Silver Eagle Design
Adolph A. Weinman's iconic depiction of Lady Liberty adorns the obverse of all versions of the American Silver Eagle coin. This design originated in 1916 for the nation's Half-Dollar coin. It features Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward the setting sun on the horizon. With the American flag draped over her shoulders, she carries the oak and laurel branches in her left arm while her right hand is outstretched toward the horizon.
Depicted on the reverse side of Silver Eagles is the image of the eagle of the United States. This design is a modern portrayal of the bald eagle with its wide wings and the national shield on its chest. Clutched in its talons are the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in the other. It holds a ribbon in its beak with the phrase "E Pluribus Unum," above its head is a cluster of 13 stars arranged in a triangle. Each of the stars represents one of the original 13 colonies in America.
2021 Silver Eagle Design
In October 2020, the United States Mint unveiled the new reverse designs for the 2021 American Eagle Silver coins. 2021 marks the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Coin program. Designer Emily Damstra created a new silver design, which mint medallic artist Michael Gaudioso sculpted. The 2021 design features an elegant American bald eagle flying back toward its nest with its wings spread out, holding an oak branch in its talons. This marks the first change of the Silver Eagle designs since the popular bullion-coin program began in 1986.
