The U.S. Gold Eagle was first introduced in 1986. A cost-effective way to collect from this series is by shopping for the 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle. This coin contains 1/10 oz of U.S. Gold, making it important for both collectibility and bullion investment. With all the appeal of the larger coin, this fractional size is available at a lower price point so more people can enjoy its widely popular design. The 1/10 Gold Eagle is backed by the U.S. dollar and has a face value of $5.

Gold Eagle Design

The U.S. Mint chose a remarkable design for the American Gold Eagle; the design used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was picked by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help redesign U.S. Gold coinage. In circulation from 1907 to 1933, Saint-Gaudens most notable achievement was the Lady Liberty design seen on the Double Eagle. In Saint-Gaudens’ original design, Liberty was featured walking forward with the U.S. Capitol building at her feet, the rays of the setting sun behind her and 46 stars surrounding her along the coin’s rim. It was amended in 1912 when Congress authorized the addition of two stars to his design to recognize the addition of New Mexico and Arizona to the Union. It was amended again when the design was chosen for American Gold Eagle; two stars were added to recognize the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to the Union.

Designed by Miley Busiek, the reverse featured a family of nesting bald eagles. The image depicts a male bald eagle returning to the nest with branches in its talons. Resting in the next, a female is portrayed standing watchful guard over the young hatchlings. Created in 1986, this design is used solely on the American Gold Eagle.

2021 Gold Eagle Design

In October of 2020, the United States Mint has unveiled the new reverse designs for the 2021 American Eagle Gold coins. 2021 marks the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle Coin program. Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer Jennie Norris created the new Gold coin design that was sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Renata Gordon. The 2021 design features the American bald eagle in left-profile relief with remarkable detail in the feathers on its head. The bald eagle gazes toward the horizon with a piercing glare. This marks the first change of the beloved Gold Eagle designs since the exceptionally popular bullion-coin program began in 1986.
