Chinese Gold Panda CoinsIssued by the People's Republic of China since 1982, the Chinese Gold Pandas are .999 fine Gold. In 2016, the People's Republic of China began minting Gold Pandas in metric system sizes to better suit the international appeal of the coins. These gram sizes replaced the troy ounce sizes of previous dates in the series.
While not an exact conversion, the new gram sizes provide the closest metric equivalent to the similarly sized ounce counterparts:
- 1 oz replaced by 30 grams
- 1/2 oz replaced by 15 grams
- 1/4 oz replaced by 8 grams
- 1/10 oz replaced by 3 grams
- 1/20 oz replaced by 1 gram
The obverse design of the Gold Panda coin depicts the image of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Unlike many Gold bullion coins, the reverse design of the Chinese Gold Panda changes each year. Though varying each year, the reverse nevertheless always depicts the rare yet well-known animal inhabiting China: the panda. These Gold coins are loved worldwide for its distinctive coloring, natural and unstrained appearance, meek temperament, and innocence. The panda celebrated on this coin gives the Gold Panda bullion coin series an endearing touch.
If you are torn between gold coins and gold bars, gold coins like the Chinese Gold Panda have an inherent precious metal value in addition to their face value, since they are backed by a sovereign government.
