The annual event marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year in October or November, with the date changing in accordance with the Hindu lunar calendar.
Rituals practiced during Diwali include cleaning and decorating homes with oil lamps called diyas. Family feasts, gift-giving, fireworks and sweets are other long-established customs. Participants also pay homage to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and the elephant headed Ganesha, the god of good fortune.
Coin Highlights:
- Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine Silver.
- The coin is presented in a contemporary latex case that displays both sides of the coin and is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
- Obverse: The medallion’s obverse portrays Ganesha sitting on a cushion surrounded by the same halo motif, lanterns and the inscription "happy diwali." The god is attended by a mouse, one of his traditional mounts, who offers a sweet as a symbol of generosity.
- Reverse: The medallion’s reverse portrays a representation of Lakshmi sitting on a lotus flower, the symbol of enlightenment. An intricate halo design and hanging lanterns surround the goddess, while coins from her palm tumble into a bowl. Also included in the design is the inscription "happy diwali," the medallion’s weight and fineness, and The Perth Mint’s traditional "P" mint mark.
